During a ceremony at the Canadian Forces Base 9 Wing Gander last Wednesday, Lt. Col. Conway was given a proper sendoff, while incoming wing commander, , was introduced.

Lt. Col.

However, during his speech to those in attendance at last week's ceremony, the outgoing wing commander assured Lt. Col. Thibault he would enjoy his time in Gander.

In turn, Lt. Col. Thibault told a small media gathering he's looking forward to the challenges ahead, but plans on taking it one step at a time.

"There are two things I plan on doing in the beginning," said Lt. Col. Thibault through a French accent. "First of all, I will just observe what's happening, because before I make any changes or influence anything, I truly want to understand what's happening. I also intend to re qualify on the helicopter to be one of the pilots."

Although last week's ceremony had serious overtones, it also had its comical moments. During his speech, Lt. Col. Conway said his wife still isn't used to waitresses saying "my lover" whenever they get served at a local restaurant, and added he will take one famous Newfoundland and Labrador saying with him to Ottawa: long may your big jib draw.

Lt. Col. Thibault countered by saying it might take him a while before he uses the term "my lover" whenever he speaks to people on the streets.

To his surprise, former commander wing officer Eli Rowsell roared into the gymnasium on a motorcycle to carry him out of 9 Wing Gander.

"I was posted here for five years before, and I really, really enjoyed my time here, and to be back here in charge of the Wing is a great pleasure for me.""I'm very pleased to be back in Gander," said Lt. Col. Thibault, who was stationed in Gander from 1998 2003 as a commanding officer with the local search and rescue squadron. "Gander is a great community, and Newfoundland and Labrador is a great place to live. I'm very pleased. I was posted here for five years before, and I really, really enjoyed my time here, and to be back here in charge of the Wing is a great pleasure for me."

"Search and rescue is my life, basically," he said. "I'm very pleased to be back in this place because it's such an important place to be for a search and rescue squadron."

He said the conversation isn't a new one, and doesn't believe anything is about to change.

"We've heard this kind of conversation for many, many years," he said. "The military is still providing search and rescue for our country, and I personally don't think it's going to change."
